About Castle of Saumur

The Castle of Saumur, initially worked as a palace and later developed as a chateau, is situated in the French town of Saumur, in the Maine-et-Loire department. It was initially developed in the 10th century by Theobald I, Count of Blois, as an invigorated fortification against Norman predations. It disregards the conjunction of the Loire and the Thouet. In 1026 it came under the control of Fulk Nerra, check of Anjou, who handed down it to his Plantagenet beneficiaries. Following its destruction in 1067, the manor was revamped by Henry II of England in the later 12th century.

Among the most imperative landmarks are simply the incomparable Castle of Saumur which stands high disregarding the town, and the adjacent Chateau de Beaulieu which stands only 200 meters from the south bank of the Loire waterway; designed by the famous draftsman Jean Drapeau, it is perceived for its light and rich engineering. The design of Saumur is great described in the book: Saumur - Promenade D'architectures, by Marie Jane Durand, and distributed by the Tourism Office of Saumur.
