Located at a distance of 8 km from the town of Roorkee, Piran Kaliyar Sharif is an important pilgrimage center. It is situated in the Kaliyar village, near Haridwar on the banks of the Ganges. Piran Kaliyar is a dargah dedicated to the 13th-century Sufi saint Alauddin Ali Ahmed Sabir Kalyari. The Dargah is one of the most revered Muslim pilgrimage sites in India.
The shrine is said to have been built by Ibrahim Lodhi, an Afghan ruler of Delhi. Over the centuries, a town developed around the shrine. It came to be known as Piran Kaliyar. The Dargah sees a huge number of devotees during the Urs festival. The death of the Sufi saint is greatly celebrated. It can be easily reached from the Roorkee Railway Station. It can be visited throughout the year. The village is a quiet little place to observe the local culture of the people as well.
