The Old Silk Route passes through East Sikkim and its adjoining areas. It is a part of the ancient network of trade routes that connected China and India. Once an essential trade route, the Silk Route is now a popular tourist attraction.
The route passed through Lhasa and Nathu La and Jelep La Pass, and stretched out to the Far East. It is said to have been discovered by traders as early as First Century AD. The Silk Route was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. Tourists go for sight-seeing trips and treks along the Silk Route Circuit. It is a beautiful sight, cutting through the Himalayan ranges.
