Located at an altitude of 13,500 feet above sea-level, Nathang is akin to paradise on earth. It is a lush valley located in the lower Himalayas in east Sikkim. Snow clad in winter, the valley is a sight to behold. It is flanked by the Himalayan Mountains on all sides with a thin meandering stream cutting across the valley.
Nathang was home to the traditional yak herders of Tibet. The Old Silk Route crosses through the valley. This is one of the main tourist attractions. The valley can be seen in different colors according to the seasons. It is golden during autumn as the grass dries up. During spring time, a blanket of wild flowers covers the valley. In winter, it is buried deep in white snow. A host of migratory birds visit Nathang during the winters.
Nathang has a lot in store for tourists. There is the famous Eagle’s Nest Bunker which offers a 360 degree view of the entire Himalayan ranges. The sunrise over the Kanchenjunga peak is a mesmerizing sight. There is a host of beautiful lakes. Other activities include trekking, a ride through the valley on a yak or a horse, and bird and butterfly watching in summer.
