The Maulana Azad Library is located in the city of Aligarh. It is the central library of the Aligarh Muslim University. It has the distinction of being the largest university library in all of Asia.
The foundation of the library was laid in 1877 and it was initially called the Lytton Library. When Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the library in the year 1960, it was renamed as the Maulana Azad Library after a great scholar and freedom fighter, who was also the First education Minister of Independent India. The library is said to house nearly about 1,400,000 books. It has a collection of books in many different languages. A seven-storey building surrounded by lush green lawns, the library is a book lover’s paradise.
