A ride on the toy train is a great experience which passes through the foothills of Himalaya. The toy train has been given the status of UNESCO World Heritage. It has been running in the narrow gauge since the year 1880’s and links it to important places of Darjeeling both in the hills and to the lower areas.
You will not usually see a steam engine running a full train and taking you to some of the breathtaking gradients and curves. The speed of the train is more or so like a snail and you can see local people and school children hopping off and on the train.
There are some places where diesel engines operate but mostly it is the steam engine which pulls the train. It becomes difficult to run the train during monsoon especially in the slopes as it skids. One can see an attendant during monsoons putting sands in the track so that the train doesn’t skid.
