An important monument in Hampi, the elephant stables are a beautiful structure which acted as shelter of the royal elephants of the Vijayanagr empire. It is located in the are outside the Zenana enclosure.
It survived the damages of the Mughal attacks that led to the fall of the Vijayanagar empire. It is a major attraction among the tourists today. It was constructed in 15th century. The temple represents the amazing craftsmanship of the artisans of that area.
It is one of the finest examples of Indo-islamic style of architecture. Therr are eleven huge chambers, each of them large enough to accommodate two elephants at a time. There are small doorways in the walls between the arches. The whole monument epitomizes majesty and is worth a visit.
