It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingams, the temples which are said to be the sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. Located in the city of Ujjain, this temple is situated on the banks of Rudra Sagar lake. The main deity, Lord Shiva, is in the Lingam form and is said to derive power currents from within itself as against other images or lingams which are ritually invested with mantra shakti.
The temple is built in a unique way. It has its shikhar or peak soaring in the sky, an imposing facade against the skyline and evokes a majesty like none other. The temple dominates the life of the city and locals, even amidst the hustle and bustle of life. It witnesses a huge crowd on the day of Shivratri as fairs are held there.
