The AMU Jama Masjid is located within the Aligarh Muslim University Campus. It is one of the oldest structures in the campus. The construction of the mosque began in 1879 by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim University.
The mosque resembles the Jama Masjid of Shahjahanabad, Delhi. It has been constructed with sandstone and white marble. It contains three domes and two lofty minarets. The interior is highly ornamented and beautiful. Verses from the Holy Quran have been inscribed on the white marble. Golden floral patterns on the marble, carved pillars, multicolored glass doors, arches and Calligraphic inscriptions add to its beauty.
