Sri Gokilambal Thirukameshwara Temple

Sri Gokilambal Thirukameshwara Temple also referred to as Villianur Temple, is a famous place of worship of Hindus. It is an old and very beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of a 'Shivlinga'.It is an ideal vacation spot for travellers, history lovers, worshippers and photographers who wish to seek some depth into history.

This temple was constructed by a Chola king in the 12th century CE. According to the history, the king was suffering from leprosy and worshipped Lord Shiva in this temple and got cured. Therefore, constructed the temple and named it Villianur.

The temple has several beautiful pillars with carved images. The temple has two majestic towers, exquisitely designed and sculptured. This temple has a little bit of French heritage attached to it, though not in its architecture, but in some of its traditions. The annual Temple Car Festival which is held here involves the pulling of a 15-metre tall chariot through the streets by a large crowd of devotees. Devotees believe that pulling this holy chariot will fulfil their wishes. Devotees offer curd, sandal and buttermilk as the offering to the god. The architecture of this Temple is marvellous and attracts a big number of tourists.
