Pondicherry Museum

Pondicherry Museum has a gallery with sculptures is located on Saint Louis Street. The museums are both - enlightening and entertaining. The Pondicherry Museum has on display a fantastic collection of sculptures, handicrafts, archaeological findings.

The museum has a collection of rare bronzes and stone sculptures from the Pallava and Chola dynasties and artefacts excavated from Arikamedu. Children’s Museum is located next to the Botanical Gardens; it has collections of snail shells from the Pondicherry region. The museum also has a Geology room, a shell and fossil room and a collection of handicrafts, coins, church relics and French furniture. The best part is that the museum has separate sections for fossils and shells. Glass painting, contemporary and colonial prints are put into an exhibition in this museum. Burial urns, terracotta figures, crockery, guns, swords, paintings, mirrors and several other things dating back to different periods are preserved here.

The major attraction is the central space with 3 curious transport mechanisms - a coach, a palanquin (sedan chair) and a pousse-pousse (an earlier version of the rickshaw) which required two attendants, one to steer and one to push. This beautiful museum has an exceptional gallery with sculptures in Pondicherry which attracts a large number of tourists.
