About Kothandaramaswamy Temple

Rameswaram has a number of temples which must be visited once in a lifetime. The Kothandaramaswamy is another temple to add to the list. It is located at a distance of 13 kms from the town, on the southernmost tip of the island.

The temple is known to survive the cycle of 1964 that had washed away Dhanushkodi. The deities worshipped in the temple are Rama, Lakshman, Sita, Hanuman and Vibhishan. The temple surrounded by sea looks beautiful and attracts the attention of visitors. The temple holds the significance of the event of Vibhishan joining Lord Ram's army.

The walls of the temple have beautiful paintings on them, that depict the story of Ramayan. Those interested in mythology must visit the temple. One of the oldest trees, Athi Maram is located inside the temple.
