About Cmielow Castle

Cmielow Castle is a ruined castle in Cmielow, Poland. It seems in documents in 1388, but alternatively they relate to the close by castle Podgrodzie. The existing ruins are the remains of a fort built in the years 1519-1531 through Krzysztof Szydlowiecki. The fortress consisted of parts, the right castle invested on the island and the ward from the south gate tower. There were residential buildings related to the fort chapel. The chapel consisted of a nave and chancel placed within the basement, with dwelling quarters above it. Over the gate is located a basis pill from 1531.

The fort belonged to the Tarnowski, Ostrogski Vishnyevetskis, Sanguszko and Malachowski households. In 1657 it was conquered with the aid of the Swedes, and in 1702 in part demolished. About 1800, the ward became transformed into a brewery. Fragments of the walls continue to be, along with partitions of the ward gate tower linked to the outbuilding. Traces of bastions have survived too, besides one, located at the south-east, which become completely destroyed.
