Also known as the Bara pani or Big Water lake, the Umiam Lake is a vast and scenic reservoir, crowding tourists from all across the city. The lake is a part of the Dam that was the first Hydel Power Project construction in the state. It was intended to be a reservoir to the Dam, but turned out to be a major tourist point in Shillong.
One can indulge in water activities like kayaking, water cycling, boating and scooting here. The tourists can also enjoy row boats, paddle boats, sailing boats, cruise as well as speed boats. The picturesque and panoramic setting comes from the lofty East Khasi Hills surrounding the lake. The lake is often compared to the beautiful lakes of Scotland. There is also a garden, Lum Nehru Park for the tourists which is an ideal photography spot. Many tiny islands rise from the water and appear mesmeringmzing when glimpsed from the UCC. There are many other fun activities for the children, besides boating.
