Situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary in Kottayam is every ornithologist’s paradise. Set against the picturesque Kerala Backwaters, the bird sanctuary is a favorite haunt of migratory birds.
The sanctuary was developed in a rubber plantation by an Englishman and was formerly known as Baker’s Estate. It is spread over 14 acres. The best time to visit is from June to August which is the breeding month of the resident birds of the wetlands. Between the months of November and May, the sanctuary has migratory birds flying in from everywhere. The lake adds to the beauty of the sanctuary. The main attractions are Indian Darter, Little cormorant, different species of egrets and herons, white ibis, Brahminy kite, as well as the migratory Siberian crane.
