About Kottathavalam

Kottathavalam lies atop the Murugan Hills at Kurisumala in Kottayam. It is a magnificent cave, carved out of the hills.

According to popular legends, it is said that the royal family of Madurai rested here, on their way to Poonjar. There are a series of stone steps that lead to the cave. This is a popular picnic spot for tourists. You can also explore the ancient carvings on the walls of the cave. Famous figures of Meenakshi, Ayyappa, Murugan, and Kannaki have been sculpted on these walls which depict Madurai’s ancient culture. A walk through this enchanting cave will take you back in time.
