About Boat races

The Kottayam boat races are held during the months preceeding the festival of Onam. It is a magnificent sight to see these huge colorful boats race each other in the picturesque backwaters of Kerala.

These races are held in the months of July, August and September. The two main boat races of Kumarakom are the Kumarakom Boat Race and the Kavanattinkara Boat Race. Tourists come in large numbers to see these races. Boats of different shape and size participate which are rowed by almost 50 men.
