One of the most magnificent monuments in Mahabalipuram is Arjun's penance. It was built in the mid 7th century. This bas air relief stands tall on a height of 43 feet. One cannot just perceive its beauty in a photograph, it has to be seen with one's own eyes. It is said that the subject of this massive structure is Arjun's penance. Some historians argue it to be the Descent of Ganges too.
Arjun's penance comes from an extract of Mahabharat, which talks about how Arjun performed several austerities to attain Shiva's weapon. History buffs must make it a point to visit this beautiful monument.
