The Church of St Mary Magadalene
About The Church of St Mary Magadalene
The Church of St Mary Magadalene, Newark-on-Trent is a ward church in the Church of England in Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire. It is a Grade I recorded building. The present church is the third on this site. The Saxon church that remained on the site was in the house of the Earl of Mercia and his better half Lady Godiva, yet nothing of that structure currently remains. Newark had been allowed by the Earl to the priests of Stow.
It is prominent for the pinnacle and the octagonal tower , the most astounding in Nottinghamshire and rumored to be the 5th tallest in the UK. The focal docks stay from the past chapel, dating from the eleventh or 12th century. The upper parts of the pinnacle and tower were finished around 1350; the nave dates from somewhere in the range of 1384 and 1393, and the chancel from 1489. The asylum is limited on the south and north by two chantry sanctuaries, the previous of which has on one of its boards a momentous painting from the Dance of Death.
