About Maumbury Rings

Maumbury Rings is a Neolithic henge in the south of Dorchester town in Dorset, England. It is a huge roundabout earthwork, 85 meters in distance across, with a solitary bank and a passageway toward the north east. It was altered amid the Roman time frame when it was adjusted for use as an amphitheater, and the site was rebuilt again amid the English Civil War when it was utilized as a mounted guns fortification guarding the southern way to deal with Dorchester. The landmark is presently an open space, and utilized for outside shows, celebrations and reenactments.
Maumbury Rings were exhumed by Harold St George Gray from 1908– 1913. The unearthings demonstrated that the site began in the later Neolithic period. The unearthings uncovered an inner dump which included a progression of profound shafts cut into the chalk. These number up to 45, and were up to 11 meters deep. Eight shafts were completely excavated. They contained different stores including tusk, creature and human bone, stones and cut chalk. A single Grooved product ceramics sherd was recuperated from one pit, and a later Beaker sherd was recouped from the fill of another pit. The henge had a solitary passage on the upper east side. It is recorded that a huge stone was found amid development in 1849 toward the west of the passageway, however it was reburied and has not been seen since.
