It neglects the remains of Tushpa the antiquated Urartian capital amid the 9th century which was focused upon the lofty sided feign where the post presently sits. Various comparable strongholds were worked all through the Urartian kingdom, generally cut into slopes and outcrops in spots where current Armenia, Turkey and Iran meet. Progressive gatherings, for example, the Medes, Achaemenids, Armenians, Parthians, Romans, Sassanid Persians, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuks, Safavids, Afsharids, Ottomans and Russians each controlled the stronghold at some time.

The antiquated stronghold is found only west of Van and east of Lake Van in the Van Province of Turkey. The lower parts of the dividers of Van Citadel were developed of unmortared basalt, while the rest was worked from mud-blocks. Such fortifications were utilized for territorial control, instead of as a protection against outside armed forces. The vestiges of this stronghold sit outside the cutting edge city of Van, where they bolster dividers worked in the medieval period.
