About Shevaroy temple

The cave temple, Shevaroy is characterized with dark and narrow caves and adorned with the idols of Goddess Kaveri and Lord Shevaroyan. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shevaroyan, who is worshipped by the tribal people. He is believed to be the God of Shevaroyan Hills, while Goddess Kaveri is considered to be the goddess of River Cauvery and according to the tribal beliefs, the guardian deity of 67 villages adjoining Yercaud.

This temple dates back to 2000 years and the locals say that the cave beyond the temple extends upto the Kaveri River in Karnataka. It is also said that Tipu Sultan hid in that cave during war. Besides, there is a wishing well near the temple and the tribals believe that throwing one out of three stones picked up from the temple, with their backs to the well can assure success in life.

An annual festival is held here during the month of May, with great pomp and show. The tribals as well as the visitors enjoy in the festivity. The temple is a good viewpoint for the scenic beauty of the hills and Yercaud town.
