Located about 14 kilometers from Mahabalipuram is the Crocodile Bank, established by the herpetologist, Romulus Whitaker in 1976. The Crocodile bank is hole to a variety of species of Indiana and African crocodiles and alligators.
The crocodiles and alligators are kept in open ponds that have been made in resemblance to their natural habitat. The Crocodile Conservation Center is a must visit there. There is also a snake farm at the site. The laboratories produce anti venoms. Extracting snake venom is a popular tourist attraction, and that is how the snake catcher's tribes earn a living.
