Batasia Loop & Gurkha War Memorial

The Batasia Loop is located just below the Ghoom Monastery. It is a spiral railway track where the Darjeeling Toy Train makes a full 360 degree turn around the Gurkha War Memorial.

The toy train, while passing through the loop, offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and the city of Darjeeling. The track has been laid around a beautiful flower garden. The Gurkha War Memorial is a site of historical importance. It was built in order to commemorate the brave Gurkha soldiers who achieved martyrdom in the Indian War of Independence. There is a 30 feet high cenotaph in the middle which has the Roll of Honour inscribed on it. The names of the martyrs along with the dates of their death are put up on it. Next to the cenotaph stands a 9 feet high bronze statue of a Gurkha soldier.
