About Nylars Church

Nylars Church is a 12th-century round church within the village of Nylars near Ronne in the south of the Danish island of Bornholm. Originally designed for a protective function, the strong shape includes a sequence of 13th-century frescos, the oldest of Bornholm's 4 round churches. Built round 1165, the church became committed to St Nicholas. The vintage Danish name for Nicolas was Nilaus which has evolved into the existing name of Nylars. The 3 storeys are constructed of fieldstone and with window and door frames of limestone. The authentic defensive structures are in large part intact. The embellished south door is well-preserved.

The porch is from 1879. The church first belonged to the Archbishopric of Lund, then came underneath the Danish crown on the time of the Reformation. In the 19th century, it became completely impartial. The 3-storey round structure with a diameter of 11 metres became initially unlimed. The oval-fashioned chancel and its apse were built on the identical time as the nave. Unlike the round church buildings of Osterlars and Ols whose masony is supported by means of buttresses, Nylars is solidly constructed with walls up to 2 metres thick.
