There is hardly any other country, apart from Egypt, that has fascinated tourists and researchers alike for many centuries. Egypt was home to the oldest modern civilizations which still seems to be alive in the thousands of wonders they have left behind. Situated in the northern part of Africa, Egypt is one of the most populous countries of the continent. It covers a total area of 1,002,450 sq. km which incorporates the vast Sahara Desert. Leaving the beautiful Nile Valley, most of the Egypt is arid desert; though as beautiful. Egypt is connected to Middle East in Asia by a land bridge. The country is bordered by Mediterranean Sea in north, Israel to northeast, Red Sea to east, Libya to west and Sudan to south.

Traveling in Egypt is like virtually stepping back to a different era of royalty, power, myths and enigma. Nile River that divides Egypt almost into two equal halves has been the lifeline for the earliest of civilizations as well as for the present one. The only arable lands are present around Nile thus supporting cities to thrive. This also means that most of the attractions of the country are situated around this river.

The Valley of Kings, The Pyramids of Giza, The Sphinx, the massive rock temples of Abu Simbel are the first things that come to mind as soon as one tries to visualize Egypt. However, there is more to Egypt than just beautiful rock sculptures and vest deserts. To explore the best of Egypt, just take a cruise on River Nile that invariably gives you glimpses of the most beautiful sights.

One look of the Cairo skyline and you will know that this is the most happening city in Egypt. It is the capital city of Egypt and also the largest. The city is clearly demarcated into medieval Islamic city and modern city. The age old citadels and houses, narrow and crowded streets define the medieval Cairo whereas sky kissing towers, wide and long roads constitute the modern Cairo. Alexandria is the second largest city of Egypt and has the largest port of the country. This city too has some really wonderful attractions and matches up to Cairo when it comes to so called 'City Life'.

What you see today is the inner structure of the original building. There was a layer of casing stones over it which were lost in the course of time.

The Sphinx - Cairo
The Great Sphinx at Giza represents a mythological figure with body of a lion and head of a man. Situated by the banks of River Nile, the original location of Abu Simbel was below the present location which is under the water today. In the year 1959, the entire temple was moved to its present location after a threat to the original temple of being submerged arose.

The construction of the temples is believed to have been completed in the year 1224 BC, 20 years after it was started. The temple was rediscovered only in the year 1813 and since then has been of great fascination for archaeologists and tourists. The Great Temple which is dedicated to gods Amen Re, Ra-Horakhty and Ptah, is also dedicated to Pharaoh Ramesses II as well. The main attraction of the temple are the 4 huge 20 meter statues of the Pharaoh with double crown of upper and lower Egypt. The smaller temple is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Ramesses II's main wife, Nefertari. The façade of this temple too has breathtaking statues of Pharaoh Ramesses and wife Nefertari.

Situated near Luxor, the complex is divided into four precincts. The largest of them all is the Precinct of Amun-Re. It is also the only portion that is opened to general public. Sinai is traversed by pilgrims who come here to visit Monastery of St. Catherine, which has constructed in the 6th century B.C. There are two routes to climb Mt. Sinai. They are not very well marked so it is advised that you take a guide along, especially when traveling at night, which probably will be the case.
