It is an energetic Anglican parish church within the deanery of Kendal, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with the ones of six nearby church buildings to shape the Kirkby Lonsdale Team Ministry. The church carries Norman structure and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The oldest parts of the church are Norman. Three doorways and the internal north arcades date from the early 12th century, and the bottom of the tower and the south arcade are from the later a part of that century.

In the 14th century the north and south walls of the church had been demolished and have been rebuilt further outwards, the brand new south wall incorporating the earlier south doorway. A chantry chapel turned into added to the northeast of the church in 1486. In the 16th century a brand new clerestory, pinnacles and battlements had been introduced, and in 1574 a further aisle become constructed in addition north of the existing north aisle. The pinnacle of the tower became rebuilt in 1705, and the chantry chapel changed into demolished at that point. In 1807 the clerestory, battlements and pinnacles have been removed via Francis Webster, who added an overall roof.
