About Mateesti
Mateesti is a municipality within the county of Valcea, Oltenia, Romania, consisting of the Greek, Mateesti and Turcesti villages. Mateesti commune is positioned inside the northwest of Valcea county, at a distance of seventy two km. From Ramnicu Valcea and 20 km. From Horezu. Located at an altitude of 365 to 360 m, within the area of the sub-Carpathian hills, it makes the crossing between the mountainous location of the Southern Carpathians to the north and the western Piedmont to the south.
The first documentary attestation concerning the modern-day Mateesti commune may be determined in a document of the department of the estate of the Greek village, in which it is proven that the pope Stancu justifies the residences by using a letter from 1557 given by Patrascu cel Bun: “they were bought to Mr. Preda Buzescu and he dominated the border of the Greek village for 9 years ”. Later on November 18, 1587, the ruler Mihnea Voievod - Turcitul, in his second reign between 1585-1591, gives the occurrences of the people of Mateesti and other villages. By the decree given by using Mihai Viteazul in February 1598 to Preda Buzescu, it is proven that the residents of Turcesti “voluntarily sell this boyar with all the ancestral occina” for the sum of 15,900 lei.
