About Uparkot Fort

Uparkot fort is one of the most ancient forts located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat. It is believed to have been built in 39 BC by Chandragupta, the emperor. It is the oldest part of Junagadh. The fort is about 2300 years old. The height of walls are up to 20 metres in some places.

The walls of the fort show a magnificent mosque, a set of old Buddhist caves and two fine step walls. One can get to the roof and experience the amazing view of the city from the there. The caves are characterized with beautiful pillars abd entrances.The Jama Masjid mosque inside the fort was converted from a palace by Sultan Mahmud Begada. Near to the mosque are the Buddhist caves. The fort has twl fine step wells: Adi Kadi Vav, named after two girls who fetched water from it and Navghan Kuvo, designed to ho withstand the sieges.
