Jageshwar is a Hindu pilgrimage town in Almora, located at a height of 1870 meters. Jageshwar is one of 12 Jyotirlingams, and hence has a lot of religious value. The temples here are dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Jageshwar Shiv temple is the oldest Shiv temple in India.
It is situated about 36 km northeast of Almora in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. This temple city comprises of 124 large and some small stone temples, all dating 9th to 12th century. Among the famous temples are the Dandeshwar temple, Chandi-ka-Temple, Jageshwar temple, Kuber Temple, Mritunjaya temple, Nanda Devi etc.
Jageshwar is believed to be the city of Nagesh amidst the forest of Deodar and is 8th among the Dwadasa Jyotirlingams. A monsoon festival is held in July-August and holds some significance in the calendar of the Kumaon region.
