In 1179 the Drikung Kagyu Gompa was established by Kyobpa Jigten Sumg, It is famous among locals. Now it is at present headed by two Kyabgon Rinpoches – His Holiness Drikung Chetsang and His Holiness Drikung Chungtsang. Drikung Kagyu is one of the eight minor heredities of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Significant genealogies are those which were established by the prompt supporters of Gampopa 1079-1153, while minor ancestries were established by pupils of Phakmo Drupa , one of the three primary devotees of Gampopa. Among the Kagyu heredities, Drikung Kagyu is one of four Kagyu heredities that keep on existing as free foundations.
