This is the most frequented tourist attraction in the city. The fort has its own history, which dates back to the Mughal period. It is not only a marvel of construction but a historical artifact.
The fort formed the headquarters of the Ahmednagar Sultanate. It was taken over by the British and used a prison. It housed Jawaharlal Nehru and several other nationalists during the freedom struggle. In fact, it was here that Nehru wrote his famous book, The Discovery of India. Some of the rooms have been converted into a museum commemorating the freedom struggle. It is currently under the administration of the Armored Corps of the Indian Army.
