About Saint-Brieuc Cathedral

Saint-Brieuc Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located within the metropolis of Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, France, and committed to Saint Stephen. The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Saint-Brieuc and Treguier. It was d a minor basilica on 3 September 1875 and is a monument historique. The first church or oratory on this web page changed into built in wood in the sixth century, and a replacement building was erected in round 970. Nothing stays today of these two buildings.

The 10th century saw many assaults on Saint-Brieuc by way of the Normans, a lot so that the relics of Saint-Brieuc which had been kept right here had been moved to the Saint-Serge Abbey in Angers for safety. The building we see these days turned into began in round 1180 at some point of the episcopacy of Bishop Geffroy de Henon and building turned into properly advanced when in 1212 Bishop Pierre turned into buried at the bottom of the Tour Brieuc. Pierre had introduced the Saint-Brieuc relics lower back to the metropolis from Angers in October 1210.

Work on the building's west facade continued under the bishopric of Monseigneur Guillaume Pinchon from his arrival in 1220 to his exile to Poitiers in 1228 following Pinchon's conflict with Pierre Mauclerc. When he returned in 1231, he had a chapel constructed at the south aspect of the constructing, this committed to Saint Mathurin. His wish was to be buried inside the chapel and this happened in 1234. The creation work was finished via Pinchon's successor Philippe before his departure to the Holy Land in 1248.
