About Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, referred to generally as the "Upper Church", is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica inside the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. Built somewhere in the range of 1862 and 1871 and sanctified in 1876, it was the second of the holy places to be finished. The congregation was based over the stone over the Grotto and beside the Basilica of our Lady of the Rosary. The outside is commanded by a 70 meters tower, and two lesser towers.

Over the passageway is a mosaic portraying Pope Pius IX, who characterized the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception in 1854. The clock plays the Ave Maria hourly, and rings the hours with a 2-ton chime called Jeanne-Alphonsine. The dividers are fixed with ex voto plaques, and pennants from authority National Pilgrimages of the past. It has a progression of recolored glass windows portraying different occasions in the narrative of Lourdes, and the clerestory windows delineate Mary as the Second Eve.
