About Limassol Archaeological Museum

The Archeological Museum of the Lemesos Limassol District was established in 1948 and was at first housed in an area of the Lemesos Castle. Amid the contentions of 1964 it stayed shut as it was given over to the National Guard. Development exercises for the new present day Museum started in 1972. The new display was composed in March 1975, under amazingly troublesome conditions identified with the ongoing Turkish intrusion of the island.
The Museum houses ancient pieces that cover the advancement of civilisation on the island from the ninth thousand years to the finish of the Roman time frame. The finds are the consequence of deliberate and protect unearthings of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus and of the outside Archeological Missions in the city and the area of Lemesos also. The building comprises of two long rooms consolidated by two transversal spaces. Antiques that date from the prior periods of the historical backdrop of Cyprus, for example, the dwarf elephant and dwarf hippopotamus found at the Pre-neolithic site of Akrotiri-Aetokremmos are in plain view in the initial segment of the left Room.
These items were uncovered from some essential locales, for example, Chillourokampos in Parekklisia, Sotira, Erimi-Pampoula yet in addition from the city of Lemesos and its neighboring towns. From the Late Bronze Age onwards the business contacts and the foundation in Cyprus of pioneers from the Aegean added to the nearby contacts between the island and the Mediterranean world. These nearby contacts can be recognized with the imported Mycenaean vessels, which are displayed in the Museum close by the privately delivered vessels.
