About Green Park
The Canada Memorial in Green Park, London, United Kingdom, commemorates individuals of the Canadian Forces killed during the First and Second World Wars. It became designed by the Canadian sculptor Pierre Granche, erected in 1992 and unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 1994. The memorial became the end result of lobbying and fund elevating, a whole lot of it in Canada, by the previous Canadian media wealthy person Conrad Black. Pierre Granche, one in every of Canada's essential sculptors, gained the fee because the result of a opposition, sculpted the memorial from purple granite; it is divided by a walkway into wonderful halves, representing Britain and Canada's joint participation in World Wars I and II.
The inclined sculpture is inset with bronze maple leaves the Canadian emblemand the coat of arms of U.S.A. Water flows throughout the sloping surface and creates an phantasm of floating leaves. An inscription on the centre of the memorial reads: "In two international wars 1,000,000 Canadians got here to Britain and joined the combat for freedom. From danger shared, our friendship prospers".
At the equal time because the Memorial was being built and unveiled, the same institution of humans in the back of it raised an endowment called the Canada Memorial Foundation. Since the early 90s that endowment has been sending British students to do post-graduate studies at Canadian universities. It is managed by volunteer trustees and is completely become independent from the Green Park Memorial. However, the Foundation shares similar pursuits of encouraging the connections and cooperation among Britain and Canada.
