About Portland Basin Museum

After a noteworthy renovation and amplification, the Portland Basin Heritage Center re-opened in March 1999 as the Portland Basin Museum. Housed in the previous Ashton Canal Warehouse, the Museum is arranged close by the Ashton Canal at Portland Basin, Ashton under Lyne, inverse the intersection with the Peak Forest Canal. The Museum takes full favorable position of its situation, with pontoon trips beginning from the Museum waterfront, and mooring for visiting vessels. Counting reestablished wooden restricted water crafts.

The new Museum is on two levels. Guests enter on the upper level on which there is a portrayal of a 1920's road, including the outfitted first floor rooms of an ordinary terraced house, a school room, fish and chip shop, food merchant's shop, bar and different settings. The lower floor has a presentation about the creation of products that have been "Made in Tameside" including caps, coal and materials. There are additionally shows and models demonstrating the advancement of transport in the zone.

The Museum is open daily (aside from Mondays other than Bank Holidays) from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. Admission is Free. There is a lot of parking spot before the passageway.
