About Yeni Kale Lighthouse
The Yeni Kale Lighthouse is an lively lighthouse on Cape Fonar near Yeni-Kale fort in jap Crimea at the shore of Kerch Strait. Navigation cressets on this coast have been first noted inside the Periplus of Scylax, dated 350 BC. In 1820 a lighthouse tower turned into built at the top of Cape Fonar to manual ships navigating from the Sea of Azov to Kerch Strait. Oil lamps were used as a mild supply. In 1861 Fresnel lens with kerosene lamps had been established. Until the Second World War the Yeni Kale Lighthouse was considered because the oldest lighthouse in Crimea. In 1941, at some point of World War II, the lighthouse device was evacuated to Taman coast by light-residence keeper Mikhail Egorov.
In May 1942 a conflict between withdrawing Red Army and Nazi Germany happened in Cape Fonar vicinity. Alexander Filimonov, a Soviet mariner, aimed the fireplace of Soviet batteries. When German tanks seemed near the lighthouse, a flag changed into risen on the tower focused on the Soviet fire from the Chushka Spit. The tower got destroyed in this battle and hydrographers besieged inside the lighthouse died. In 1943 a brief light changed into hooked up on lighthouse ruins. When Kerch turned into liberated from German troops in April 1944, the lighthouse system was lower back.
