Halloween is an annual festival celebrated on 31st October every year. This festival has it's roots in celebrations by Celts as a mark to observe the end of harvest season and onset of winters. It's primarily observed in western European countries, USA, Canada and also in the few parts of Asia Pacific region. The festival of Halloween is marked by various activities like trick-or-treating (or the related "guising"), attending costume parties, decorating houses/streets, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, visiting haunted house attractions, lighting of bonfires and by wearing ghostly-scary costumes to ward off evil spirits in fun-humour way.
1. What is legend behind pumpkin carving?
The name "jack-o'-lantern" is of British origin and dates from the 17th century, when it literally meant "man with a lantern" (a night watchman). According to legend,"Stingy Jack" was a drunken miser who made a couple bad bets with the Devil during his life. One of the bets resulted in the Devil promising never to send old Jack to Hell. As it turned out, Jack wasn't let into Heaven, and the Devil kept his promise. Jack was doomed to wander Earth for eternity with only his lantern, a large carved turnip, to light his way. Jack carved out one of his turnips (which were his favorite food), put the ember inside it, and began endlessly wandering the Earth for a resting place. He became known as "Jack of the Lantern", or Jack-o'-lantern.
Since then, Jack-o-lanterns have been related with Halloween and also a way of protecting your home against the evil spirits.
