Merry Cemetery

The Merry Cemetery is a cemetery within the village of Sapanta, Maramures county, Romania. It is famous for its colourful tombstones with naïve artwork describing, in an authentic and poetic manner, the those who are buried there in addition to scenes from their lives. The Merry Cemetery became an open-air museum and a countrywide traveler appeal. The unusual feature of this cemetery is that it diverges from the ordinary perception, culturally shared within European societies a perception that views dying as some thing indelibly solemn.

Connections with the neighborhood Dacian culture have been made, a lifestyle whose philosophical tenets possibly vouched for the immortality of the soul and the belief that demise became a second filled with pleasure and anticipation for a higher existence see also Zalmoxianism.
