About Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary

The Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary is a church and monastery complex inside the Polish town of Chelm. The church and the courtyard of the Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary stand within the centre of Chelm on Chelm Hill also known as Cathedral Hill or Castle Hill. Over its records, the church has been Ukrainian Orthodox, Ukrainian Catholic also called Greek Catholic, and Roman Catholic. Surrounding the basilica's grounds is a town park and a cemetery.

The basilica is a former complicated of Orthodox Church and Basilian Monastery. It was based within the first half of the 13th century via Danylo Romanowych and served as an Orthodox Church and then as a Greek Catholic Church. The gift church turned into based in 1735-56 by means of the Greek Catholic Chelm bishop Philip Wlodkowic and turned into built according to the plans of Pawel Fontana. It is a past due baroque church constructed within the form of a Latin cross, 3-aisled basilica with a massive 8-part dome.
