About Stratemakerstoren
The Stratemakerstoren is a mid sixteenth century bastion on the Waalkade in the Dutch town Nijmegen. It is a rijksmonument and since 1995, it housed a historical center. This was shut in April 2015, for significant remaking. The Stratemakerstoren is situated on the edge of the waterway Waal, at the foot of the Valkhof at Nijmegen. This bastion was a piece of the fortresses of Nijmegen, worked in or before 1526. The present name, which signifies "Street Workers Tower", was at that point being used in 1569 - the explanation behind this name is as yet not precisely known.
The Stratemakerstoren was built to secure the neighboring entryway, the Veerpoort. The pinnacle frequently figures on old works of art and prints, where it is seen on the riverbank, at the foot of the Valkhof mansion, for instance in the canvas called the Valkhof at Nijmegen. Because of specialized advancements in fighting, before the finish of the eighteenth century, the round bastion had lost its significance as a guarded fortress. An ascent in the water level of the waterway Waal additionally implied that the pinnacle was somewhat submerged. In 1789, a neighborhood woodworker, J. ten Boven, was offered consent to assemble houses on the site of the bastion. He didn't destroy the pinnacle totally, yet simply constructed the houses over the bastion. In 1987 these houses were pulverized, and to relatively every one's unexpected the pinnacle re-rose.
