About Nationaal Militair Museum

The National Military Museum in Soesterberg is a museum in which attention is paid to the significance of the Dutch armed forces in the past, present and future with extra attention to the collections of the Army and Air Force, originating from the Army Museum in Delft and the Military Aviation Museum from Soesterberg, which have been merged into the NMM. The NMM is housed in the Royal Defense Museums Foundation. Around 2000 it appeared that both the exhibition possibilities and the conditions of the depots for the collections of the Army Museum in Delft and those of the Military Aviation Museum in Soesterberg were inadequate.

In 2001, a plan was created for a new joint museum on the grounds of the Bernhard barracks in Amersfoort. Parliamentary assent was obtained for this on 13 February 2003. After it became apparent in 2003 that the Soesterberg Airbase would close with Defense as a result of a cutback operation, this location was still chosen. In July 2006, the State Secretary for Defense informed the Chamber that the collections of the Army Museum and Military Aviation Museum would go to Soesterberg.
