Located 10 kms from the main town, the Tapovan Hills are a famous tourist attraction in Deoghar. It is known for the Tapo Nath Mahadev temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is called Tapovan because it was a meditation spot in the olden days for Nagas.
The history goes that Sage Valmiki went there for penance and Sri Sri Balananda Brahmachari attained success through penance there. There is a cracked rock at Tapovan, the inner surface of which reveals the portrait of Lord Hanuman. There is a kund below the hill which is a local water body.
