About Rashtrapati Niwas

The Rashtrapati Niwas is located on the observatory hill- which is one of the seven hills of Shimla. This building was constructed as a resident place for Lord Dufferin who was the viceroy of India at that time.This was designed in a Jacobethan style which depicted English Renaissance revival and at the same time looked like Hogwarts School of Harry Potter.

As this lodge served as a summer retreat of the President of India, it was renamed as Rashtrapati Niwas.This was made into a scholar’s abode wherein the IIAS was moved into the lodge in 1965.

There is a museum which is located inside the lodge. One can expect to see the photographs and texts from the era of British colonial rule.One such alumnus of this institute is named as Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. This building was starred in the award-winning movie Black.
