About Dean Castle

Dean Castle is situated in the Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland. It was the fortification for the Boyd Family, who were masters of Kilmarnock for more than 400 years. The Castle takes its name from 'The Dean' or lush valley, a typical place name in Scotland. Be that as it may, until around 1700 it was called Kilmarnock Castle. Claimed initially by the Boyd family, it has solid verifiable associations with numerous individuals and occasions acclaimed in Scottish history.
Robert the Bruce who gave the Boyds these terrains; James III of Scotland whose sister wedded a Boyd; the Covenanters, some of whom were detained here; Bonnie Prince Charlie, whose disobedience was joined by the fourth Earl of Kilmarnock and Robert Burns who was urged to distribute his verse by the Earl of Glencairn who claimed the Castle at that time. The Boyd Family came into ownership of the grounds of Dean Castle in 1316, when Sir Robert Boyd was remunerated the terrains of Kilmarnock and West Kilbride by King Robert I for his administrations at the Battle of Bannockburn.
