About Great Orme Tramway

The Great Orme Tramway is a cable-hauled 3 toes 6 in gauge tramway in Llandudno in north Wales. Open seasonally from overdue March to late October, it takes over 200,000 passengers each year from Llandudno Victoria Station to simply underneath the summit of the Great Orme headland. From 1932 onwards it changed into called the Great Orme Railway, reverting to its original call in 1977. It is Great Britain's simplest last cable-operated road tramway, and one among only some surviving in the international, and it's miles owned by Conwy County Borough Council. The line accommodates two sections, wherein each section is an unbiased funicular and passengers exchange automobiles at the midway station.

Whilst the upper section runs on its very own proper of way and is very just like many other funicular lines, the decrease section is an unusual road-going for walks funicular. Whilst the road going for walks section resembles the higher-recognized San Francisco cable motors, its operation is quite one-of-a-kind in that it adheres to the funicular precept in which the cars are completely fixed to the cable and are stopped and started by using stopping and starting the cable, unlike San Francisco where cars attach to, and detach from, a continuously walking cable. As such, this phase's closest family are Lisbon’s Glória, Bica, and Lavra street funiculars.
