About Valreas
Valreas is a commune within the Vaucluse department within the Provence Alpes Cote d Azur place in southeastern France. The vicinity across the town of Valreas is referred to as L Enclave des Papes. It is an enclave of Vaucluse, surrounded by the department of the Drome. The basis of the Enclave started in 1317 when Pope John XXII bought Valreas for the papacy of Avignon. The story goes that following a go to to Valreas, feeling unwell he become supplied a few wine from the vicinity. Liking it he determined to purchase the city to ensure his wine deliver.
Over the following 150 years or so his successors delivered to the Enclave by means of the addition of the small cities of Visan, Richerenches and Grillon. The limitations had been described by tall stone markers sporting the coat of Arms of the Popes. The modern day barriers are still delimited via some of those stones, one in all that's outside the doorway to the Valreas Tourist office. When the departments of France have been created after the Revolution the people of the Enclave requested to stay as a part of the department of Vaucluse.
