L Isle sur la Sorgue
About L Isle sur la Sorgue
L Isle sur la Sorgue is a town and commune on the Sorgue River in southeastern France. Politically, the commune is in the arrondissement of Avignon in the department of Vaucluse and the vicinity of Provence Alpes Cote d Azur. The small metropolis is famous for its many vintage stores and hosts vintage markets maximum Sundays. It has many waterside cafes and eating places, all within on foot distance of every different. Its many attractive water wheels throughout the city are still in working order.
Keith Floyd, the British TV chef and bon viveur, established an eating place there at some stage in a prolonged sojourn in France. Originally known as Insula the metropolis officially adopted the call of L Isle sur la Sorgue on 18 August 1890, taking the latter a part of its call from the river Sorgue to which it owed a lot. As early as the 12th century, the river served defensively as a moat around ramparts which surrounded the metropolis until 1795. The river also served as a source of meals and industry fishing and artisan turbines for oil, wheat, silk, paper, woolen, rugs and dyeing.
