About Kansas State Capitol

The Kansas State Capitol in Topeka was worked in the French Renaissance style. It contains paintings by Kansas local John Steuart Curry. The Capitol grounds highlight bronze statues of Abraham Lincoln and a Pioneer Mother and Child etched by Merrell Gage. The east wing foundation was laid October 17, 1866. The darker stone did not solidify adequately amongst quarrying and development. Following an unforgiving winter in 1867, the foundation and establishment of the wing disintegrated. The stone was expelled and harder limestone from Geary County was utilized to supplant the establishment and proceed with development on the wing. Limestone from Cottonwood Falls was chosen for utilize somewhere else in the development.
